Supermicro is the only system vendor publishing record MLPerf inference performance (on select benchmarks) for both the air-cooled and liquid-cooled NVIDIA HGX B200 8-GPU systems. Both air-cooled and liquid-cooled systems were operational before the MLCommons benchmark start date. Supermicro engineers optimized the systems and software to showcase the impressive performance. Within the operating margin, the Supermicro air-cooled B200 system exhibited the same level of performance as the liquid-cooled B200 system. Supermicro has been delivering these systems to customers while we conducted the benchmarks. MLCommons emphasizes that all results be reproducible, that the products are available and that the results can be audited by other MLCommons members. HP is expanding into the DIY gaming PC market with a new line of Omen-branded components, moving beyond its traditional prebuilt systems and laptops. The upcoming product lineup includes a single 120 mm RGB fan, a triple-pack of 120 mm modular RGB fans, a 1000 W modular power supply, a 240 mm LCD liquid cooling system, and a 360 mm aRGB liquid cooling system. HP confirms these components will work with non-Omen desktop systems, giving PC builders more flexibility.

The fans feature an annular design to help increase the airflow (up to 74 CFM) while reducing vibration through improved static pressure. MSI's MPG series sits a notch down from premium-tier MEG offerings—earlier in the day, three "cost-effective" power supply models appeared online. A handful of fortunate souls—including chi11eddog—were blessed with early access to the manufacturer's freshly-published new product catalog. The excited reader shared a compelling feature: "got new PSU brochure from MSI. The new MPG GS series models feature 235% Power Excursion. Looks pretty good!"

Yes, the title is correct. One of NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 5090D "China" edition GPUs, not the regular RTX 5090, managed to run at 3.4 GHz under liquid nitrogen. With a staggering 575 W default TDP, Tony Yu, ASUS China's general manager, has performed physical modifications that allow the card to run up to 1000 W TDP. The RTX 5090D is a China-exclusive variant with virtually no difference from the regular RTX 5090, just limited general AI capability due to US export regulations. ASUS China used its top-end Astral OC variant for this stunt, which, as we proved in our review of the regular ASUS RTX 5090 Astral OC, has some pretty good chip binning, allowing the card to reach the highest overclock. We pushed the regular RTX 5090 Astral OC GPU on air to 3086 MHz, a +277 MHz over the stock boost setting. However, the RTX 5090D equivalent under LN2 manages to reach 3,390 MHz at peak loads, which is a +581 MHz difference.

For memory, the overclock is equally impressive with 34 Gbps. Regarding performance, the LN2-overclocked RTX 5090D surpassed stock performance by approximately 16%. During benchmark tests, the GPU outperformed multiple previous-generation graphics cards, including a dual RTX 3090 Ti configuration in Port Royal and a quad GTX 1080 Ti setup in Fire Strike. Power consumption figures indicate that 1,760 W was used in total for a rig with ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090D, which is paired with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D on the ASUS ROG X870E Hero motherboard. This roughly yields a 1,000 W power consumption by the card, which has seen its PCB get physical modifications to output such high power.

Details of ASUS' next generation BTF 2.0 (BTF stands for Back to the Future) platform have appeared online, courtesy of Andreas Schilling from HardwareLuxx. The editor posted pictures from an ASUS presentation over at Bluesky that details one major change to the power connector design, which will make the BTF 2.0 graphics cards compatible with non BTF systems. This suggests that ASUS might consider offering more graphics cards with BTF 2.0 support, since they can be used in any system with the proposed changes.

As you may or may not know, the first generation BTF graphics cards ended up with a power connector at the rear, bottom edge of the graphics cards, placed somewhat behind the PCIe gold fingers. The cards also lacked any other power connectors, which made them exclusive for BTF builds. To solve this conundrum, ASUS moved its GC-HPWR PCB power connector up on the PCB, making sure it clears any motherboard components. However, instead of increasing the height of the motherboard BTF 2.0 connector, the company provides a small adapter that plugs in between the motherboard and graphics card, to make its new BTF 2.0 cards compatible with any system.

The expansion of AI technology affects not only the production and demand for graphics cards but also the electricity grid that powers them. Data centers hosting thousands of GPUs are becoming more common, and the industry has been building new facilities for GPU-enhanced servers to serve the need for more AI. However, these powerful GPUs often consume over 500 Watts per single card, and NVIDIA's latest Blackwell B200 GPU has a TGP of 1000 Watts or a single kilowatt. These kilowatt GPUs will be present in data centers with 10s of thousands of cards, resulting in multi-megawatt facilities. To combat the load on the national electricity grid, US President Joe Biden's administration has been discussing with big tech to re-evaluate their power sources, possibly using smaller nuclear plants. According to an Axios interview with Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, she has noted that "AI itself isn't a problem because AI could help to solve the problem." However, the problem is the load-bearing of the national electricity grid, which can't sustain the rapid expansion of the AI data centers.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has been reportedly talking with firms, most notably hyperscalers like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, to start considering nuclear fusion and fission power plants to satisfy the need for AI expansion. We have already discussed the plan by Microsoft to embed a nuclear reactor near its data center facility and help manage the load of thousands of GPUs running AI training/inference. However, this time, it is not just Microsoft. Other tech giants are reportedly thinking about nuclear as well. They all need to offload their AI expansion from the US national power grid and develop a nuclear solution. Nuclear power is a mere 20% of the US power sourcing, and DOE is currently financing a Holtec Palisades 800-MW electric nuclear generating station with $1.52 billion in funds for restoration and resumption of service. Microsoft is investing in a Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) microreactor energy strategy, which could be an example for other big tech companies to follow.

MSI expanded its MAG GL line of modular power supplies with two new high wattage models—the MAG A1000GL PCIE5, and the MAG A1200GL PCIE5. The company had debuted the series in June 2023, with 850 W, 750 W, and 650 W models meeting the ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0 spec. The company also took the opportunity to update its high-wattage connector standard from 12VHPWR on the original three models, to the new 12V-2x6 connector on the two new models. Both the 1000 W and 1200 W models come with a 600 W-capable 12V-2x6. The standards have also been updated, with MSI saying that the 1000 W and 1200 W models meeting ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 standards, besides the newer connector.

On both the 1000 W and 1200 W models, you now get a 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, one 600 W-capable 12V-2x6, four 6+2 pin PCIe power, twelve SATA power, four 4-pin Molex, and a Berg. These PSUs boast of 80 Plus Gold switching efficiency, and feature a single +12 V rail design, active PFC, LLC full-bridge topology, DC-to-DC switching, most common electrical protections, and a 135 mm fluid dynamic bearing fan to keep cool. The company didn't reveal pricing.

PC power supply manufacturer Seasonic has introduced a new limited-edition variant of its Vertex 1000 W 80+ Gold certified modular power supply featuring an eye-catching design inspired by cherry blossoms. Dubbed the "Vertex Sakura," this specially-themed PSU sports a clean white color scheme with pink Sakura flower graphics and a unique textured paint finish. The Vertex Sakura caters specifically to PC enthusiasts and case modders in Japan who want to build a themed rig coordinated around the colors and aesthetic of traditional Japanese cherry blossoms. It offers the same fully modular cabling as the standard Vertex 1000 W model, allowing builders flexibility in cable management.

The PSU also meets the latest ATX 3.0 specifications, including a 12VHPWR connector to support next-generation high-wattage GPUs. Seasonic showcased the Vertex Sakura 1000 W unit at 30,000 yen (around $200 USD) in Japan, where retailers recommend interested buyers preorder as soon as possible due to limited availability. Specific regional launch details outside of Japan are still forthcoming. But the Vertex Sakura's blend of technical prowess and stunning cherry blossom visual flair will likely attract global attention from PC builders looking to add an extra touch of style to their high-end systems.
