At CES 2025 we sneaked up on ViewSonic, as they were setting up a giant mosaic screen. The star attraction is the VG2748N, a 27-inch wireless monitor. The display uses Wi-Fi TX and a USB-C dongle to wirelessly get its display input from a supported source, such as a modern laptop. If you prefer wired connectivity, you get DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4. The display specs are nothing to write home about—1080p 60 Hz with 250 nits brightness; but the main pull is the wireless connectivity. The monitor isn't exactly portable, it looks conventional, but has a quick-setup stand. ViewSonic will launch this one later this quarter (before April).

For portability, the company has the VG1656N, a 16-inch portable monitor that you can cast wirelessly to. It features a 16:10 aspect ratio with 1920 x 1200 resolution, and 60 Hz refresh rate. The monitor has a built-in battery, and a pair of USB-C ports for two-way charging (to charge the monitor, as well as to charge your laptop from the monitor's battery). The monitor features a folio-type cover-stand. This monitor is available now for $300. We also spotted the XG275D-4K, a 27-inch wired monitor with 4K Ultra HD resolution. This display does 4K UHD at 160 Hz, or 1080p at 360 Hz. It packs NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility, and AMD FreeSync Premium. Inputs include DisplayPort 2.0 and HDMI 2.1. ViewSonic plans to launch this some time in Q2-2025.

At CES 2025, we found the SSD controller that will spur high-end NVMe Gen 5 SSD adoption. Until now, high-end Gen 5 SSDs were driven by Phison's E26 series controller that the company built on TSMC's 12 nm process. The company on Monday launched the new E28 series controller (full name PS5028-E28). This chip is built on the much more advanced TSMC 6 nm process. The new process lets Phison to significantly lower the electrical cost of its NAND flash interface serializer-deserializer, and step up performance closer to the interface limits of PCI-Express 5.0 x4. The controller offers sequential speeds of up to 14.5 GB/s, which is an increase from last year's E26 Max14um variant.

The company showed us the bare E28 controller chip, and a reference-design SSD based on it. Not much to report, except that the drive lacked any cooling solution. Production SSDs powered by the E28 will still need heatsinks to achieve optimal performance, although they won't run as hot as drives powered by the E26. The company didn't have any performance demo stations set up with this drive.

At CES 2025, CHERRY XTRFY showcased a wide range of products, including the MX 8.3 TKL Wireless and MX 10.1 Wireless keyboards, the H3 Wireless headset, and the GP6 and GP7 mousepads. In the office segment, CHERRY unveiled its first hot-swappable mechanical keyboard, the KW 300 MX, along with the low-profile KC 500 MX LP series and the wireless KW 550 MX LP. The H3 Wireless headset launches in early 2025, with other products following in the second quarter.

At CES 2025, the company showed off its 4th generation, the MWE Gold IV series. There will be many models in the series ranging from 650 W to 1350 W, but the one shown here is the MWE Gold 850 IV. The PSU offers 80 Plus Gold switching efficiency, and fully-modular cabling. What sets this generation of MWE apart are its standards—it meets ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 CEM specs. Its main graphics power connector is a modern 12V-2x6 capable of 600 W continuous output.

There are four additional 8-pin 12 V outputs, two of which make a pair of 4+4 pin EPS, and the others four 6+2 pin PCIe power. The PSU appears to have an illuminated Cooler Master hexagon decal on the sides. The rather compact-looking PSU uses a 120 mm fan with zero-RPM and thermal control. Besides 80 Plus Gold, the MWE Gold IV meets Cybenetics Platinum switching and Lambda-A cooling certifications. Cooler Master is backing these with a generous 10-year warranty.
