GIGABYTE Replaces DIMMs with CAMM2 on the AORUS Z890 Tachyon ICE Motherboard

GIGABYTE has just rolled out its refreshed Z890 AORUS Tachyon ICE CAMM2 motherboard, designed to give overclockers and power users a serious edge. The biggest change is support for CAMM2 DDR5 memory modules, which offer cleaner signaling and much higher speeds compared to traditional DIMMs. At first glance, the new board looks a lot like the previous Tachyon ICE model. It still features the distinctive 90-degree rotated CPU socket and top-mounted memory slots. But instead of multiple DIMM slots, you now get a single CAMM2 connector. That slot comes with a toolless heatsink for better cooling—no fiddly screws required, just snap it on and you're ready to push your memory harder. If you're into extreme memory overclocking, the original Z890 AORUS Tachyon ICE recently set a world record at DDR5-12752 thanks to GIGABYTE's in-house expert, HiCookie, using V-Color's Manta Xfinity RGB modules. That achievement shows just how far this platform can be pushed. We recently reported on G.Skill offering a DDR5-10000, 64 GB of density (2-channels or 4 sub-channels), and timings of CL56-70-70 in CAMM2 form factor. That might be interesting to keep an eye on in the future, as it is definitely a new possible world-record contender.

Industry observers noticed the inclusion of a semi-mysterious GeForce RTX 5090 custom card (briefly mentioned in official PR material); a promo render showcased an AORUS RTX 5090 MASTER ICE-esque unit. By reading in-between the lines and analyzing marketing imagery, VideoCardz reckons that this special card will sport a hidden power connector system—likely existing under the "Project STEALTH" banner.

Going back to 2023, a second iteration of the GeForce RTX 4090 WINDFORCE model was configured with a curious non-traditional power input placement (see example below). In recent times, Sapphire's Radeon RX 9070 XT and non-XT Nitro+ flagship cards have attracted plenty of praise—courtesy of a well-regarded hidden compartment. Gigabyte could be teasing an upcoming full reveal of its "AORUS RTX 5090 MASTER STEALTH ICE" graphics card; perhaps lined up for next week's Computex showcase. Hopefully, a forthcoming unveiling will demonstrate an innovative solution.

GIGABYTE AORUS RTX 5080 MASTER Starts Leaking Thermal Gel After Four Weeks of Light MMO Gaming

An unlucky owner of a GIGABYTE AORUS GeForce RTX 5080 MASTER ICE 16 GB graphics card has reported a baffling instance of thermal gel leakage. A forum post—titled: "5080 oh my god thermal problem"—on the Quasar Zone BBS alerted the wider world to this bizarre fault. The South Korean MMORPG enthusiast described circumstances up until the point of critical liquefaction: "it's been exactly a month since I bought it. I use it for (Blizzard's) World of Warcraft. Two hours of use per day. I set up the card with a riser kit. Thermal (material) is crawling out?!" Early 2025 press coverage has largely focused on other types of unwanted high temperature events involving GeForce RTX 50-series cards, but the seeping out of "server-grade thermal conductive gel" compound is something new. As reported by several PC hardware news outlets, GIGABYTE has utilized fancy thermal conductive gel within flagship SKUs—instead of traditional/conventional thermal pads. This gel was placed over the card's VRAM and MOSFET sections; following fairly light usage (as described above) some of this material started to head down—getting ever closer to the unit's PCIe interface.

Assisted by the AORUS RTX 5080 MASTER ICE's vertical orientation, the (apparently) highly deformable, but non-fluid thermal gel was susceptible to the effects of gravity. JC Hyun System Co., Ltd.—GIGABYTE's official domestic importer (for South Korea)—weighed in with a separate bulletin: "we are aware of the thermal gel issue with the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 50 series, which was first posted on Quasar Zone—(we) are currently discussing the thermal gel issue with GIGABYTE HQ and future customer service regulations. In addition, we sincerely apologize for the confusion caused to many customers who love and use GIGABYTE products due to inaccurate guidance provided to customers who received the products due to unclear customer service regulations regarding the issue that occurred this time. Lastly, when the manufacturer's customer service policy regarding this thermal gel issue is finalized, we will also forward the service policy to CS Innovation so that it can be processed smoothly in accordance with the service policy. We will also provide information through a separate post so that more customers can be aware of the information." As mentioned by Notebookcheck, GIGABYTE uses this special thermal gel solution on other highly expensive custom: "RTX 50-series cards like the GeForce RTX 5090 XTREME WATERFORCE 32G, RTX 5090 MASTER ICE, RTX 5070 Ti MASTER, and others."

GIGABYTE Preps EAGLE OC ICE GeForce RTX 40 Series Cards

GIGABYTE has augmented its EAGLE range of custom graphics card with a new white "ICE" design—the Taiwanese hardware manufacturer's website has been updated with four GeForce RTX 40 Series models that sport a striking white aesthetic. The modern day EAGLE custom cooling solutions usually pops up in a sober yet classy gray shade (with some lighter accents)—it seems that alternatives, ideal for all-white hardware build, will be arriving soon. GIGABYTE has not revealed any information regarding regional pricing, release date or a press release (at the time of writing). Four factory overclocked EAGLE ICE models are listed—starting at the bottom with a pale version of their existing RTX 4060 EAGLE OC 8 GB card, and reaching the ceiling with a white spin on their RTX 4070 Ti SUPER EAGLE OC 16 GB.

GIGABYTE has chosen to not produce an EAGLE graphics card that utilizes NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER GPU, so an ICE version is unlikely to pop up in the immediate future. GIGABYTE's RTX 4080 SUPER AERO OC model seems to be the only option available in white—within their current (Ada Lovelace) AD103-400-A1 GPU product range. VideoCardz reckons that there is a high probability of EAGLE ICE (non-overclocked) graphics cards arriving after the initial launch of OC models.

GIGABYTE has continued to push a white aesthetic (ICE) across a good number of displayed products on the show floor at this year's CES. The TPU crew got a close peek at a couple of new motherboard offerings—first up is the Taiwanese manufacturer's Z790 AORUS PRO X model with a white PCB and matching livery. The "X" designation denotes that this motherboard is good-to-go with Intel's latest 14th gen desktop CPU offerings. Their AORUS Z790 X Gen Motherboards boast "leading performance in DDR5 memory, the upgraded DIY-friendly innovations, and the all-new BIOS redesigned as user-centered, the AORUS Z790 X Gen Motherboards are built to fully unleash the next-gen power."

According to GIGABYTE's placard this white Z790 model features a 18+1+2 Twin Digital VRM design on an eight-layer PCB, VRM Thermal Armor Advanced with an 8 mm heatpipe, as well as Thermal Guard XL and Ext. for M.2 slot cooling purposes. EZ-Latch Click and M.2 EZ-Latch Plus are present, therefore creating a "seamless" DIY experience. Wi-Fi 7 connectivity (with an Ultra-high gain antenna) ensure that cutting-edge wireless standards are catered for.
