80 Plus Ruby Sets 96.5% Peak Efficiency Benchmark for Server Power Supplies

Data centers have quietly become the engines of the modern world, processing everything from social media updates to critical financial transactions. Yet, as their workloads grow, so does their appetite for power. The data center power supplies are powering these massive compute clusters, which are wasting a great deal of power converting AC to DC. A few months back, CLEAResult silently introduced 80 Plus Ruby, a new certification that raises the bar for server power supply efficiency and offers a path to greener data center operations. Data centers account for about 0.4% of US electricity use, but that figure could climb to 12% by 2028 as AI and cloud services expand. Under the Ruby standard, power supplies must achieve at least 96.5% efficiency at 50% load and maintain at least 90% efficiency at 5% and 100% loads. These thresholds apply across common voltages, including 230 VAC, 277 VAC, 480 VAC, and 380 VDC.

Unlike earlier certifications, Ruby also specifies minimum power-factor values: at 5% load, a PSU must deliver 90% efficiency with a power factor of at least 0.90, and at 20% and 50% loads, it must hit 95% and 96.5% efficiency, respectively, each with a power factor no lower than 0.96. Delta Electronics has already put three of its high-wattage power supplies through the Ruby certification process. Its 5,500 W redundant models, built for AI servers, achieved up to 97.5 percent efficiency and a power factor above 0.96. With global regulations from ENERGY STAR to the EU's ErP directive tightening efficiency rules, 80 Plus Ruby is getting real and immediate backing from power regulators and power supply makers.

When a game is submitted for testing on the Steam Deck, it can be assigned one of three different badges depending on how it performs. The Unsupported badge means that the game does not run properly on the Steam Deck and the Playable badge means that the game can be played on the Steam Deck, but the player may need to make some manual adjustments to the game for it to function correctly. The Verified badge is only awarded to games that operate well on the Steam Deck without the need for the player to make manual adjustments and don't present any significant problems when it comes to installation, performance, controls, and display.

XFX & ASRock Register Radeon RX 9070 Series SKUs in South Korea

XFX and ASRock have registered various Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 SKUs in South Korea—earlier today, harukaze5719 discovered these "public secrets." The National Radio Agency received two filings from Hightech Systematic Limited (aka XFX); the graphics card manufacturer is seeking certification for five models. A single filing from ASRock Incorporation contains one product, a Radeon RX 9070 (non-XT) Challenger 16 GB card—TechPowerUp spent a little bit of hands-on time with this particular model at CES 2025.

VESA Demoes ClearMR 21000 Displays and DP80LL Cable at CES 2025

One of two big standard announcements at CES this year was the new addition of DP80LL active cables, that extends the range of UHBR20 cables from one meter to at least three meters. In fact, the cable that VESA was showing at CES was 3.5 meters long. To be fair, it has already been possible to make longer 80 Gbps DisplayPort cables, but there hasn't been a certification that guarantees that the cables will work. As we know, it's easy for a company to make claims about their cables that often mean very little in practical terms and with a very limited range of DP 2.1 graphics cards and monitors on the market, it has been impossible as a consumer to verify some of the claims. Starting this year however, it seems like DP 2.1 will take off and as such, it's great to see that VESA finally has a certification in place, so consumers can buy the right cables with confidence.

In addition to the new DP80LL cables, VESA was demoing several ClearMR 21000 displays and for those that have forgotten what ClearMR is, it's VESA's certification standard for measuring motion blur. ClearMR 21000 is the highest tier of ClearMR and it's pretty much exclusive to high refresh-rate OLED type displays. The ClearMR 21000 tier was announced at the end of last year, so the monitors on display are some of the very first to receive this certification level. In addition to this, the world's first display to gain VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification—which was a laptop display—was also shown. It's made by Samsung Display, but beyond that we don't have much in terms of technical details, but it delivers 1000 nits peak brightness and it can deliver 120 percent of the DCI-P3 colour space, which puts it squarely in the professional display category.

Hello everyone, Expeditions: A MudRunner Game has officially been out for a couple of days, and we'd like to extend a huge thanks to all of you for the feedback received so far. Everyone in the team is on deck, watching streams, videos, and reading your comments and reviews. We're happy to see many of you enjoying Expeditions and what it's trying to achieve, although we also are aware and understand that some of you aren't satisfied with the game's current state.

Our current priorities
Some of your most recurrent feedback is about UI/UX. We cannot overhaul it in one night, but this is a big focal point for the team right now, and it will be improved through several updates. Our first update releases with this message, to bring some immediate improvements. We're also hard at work on bug reports, and the March 7 patch brings a lot of fixes based on your feedback. Be assured that we'll continue to squash as many technical issues as we can in the coming updates. We've also noticed many requests for a photo mode in Expeditions, and we're glad to add it with today's update. It only needed a few extra days of cooking!

NVIDIA Introduces Generative AI Professional Certification

NVIDIA is offering a new professional certification in generative AI to enable developers to establish technical credibility in this important domain. Generative AI is revolutionizing industries worldwide, yet there's a critical skills gap and need to uplevel employees to more fully harness the technology. Available for the first time from NVIDIA, this new professional certification enables developers, career professionals, and others to validate and showcase their generative AI skills and expertise. Our new professional certification program introduces two associate-level generative AI certifications, focusing on proficiency in large language models and multimodal workflow skills.

"Generative AI has moved to center stage as governments, industries and organizations everywhere look to harness its transformative capabilities," NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang recently said. The certification will become available starting at GTC, where in-person attendees can also access recommended training to prepare for a certification exam. "Organizations in every industry need to increase their expertise in this transformative technology," said Greg Estes, VP of developer programs at NVIDIA. "Our goals are to assist in upskilling workforces, sharpen the skills of qualified professionals, and enable individuals to demonstrate their proficiency in order to gain a competitive advantage in the job market."

NVIDIA Reportedly Sampling SK Hynix 12-layer HBM3E

South Korean tech insiders believe that SK Hynix has sent "12-layer DRAM stacked HBM3E (5th generation HBM)" prototype samples to NVIDIA—according a ZDNET.co.kr article, initial examples were shipped out last month. Reports from mid-2023 suggested that Team Green had sampled 8-layer HBM3E (4th gen) units around summer time—with SK Hynix receiving approval notices soon after. Another South Korean media outlet, DealSite, reckons that NVIDIA's memory qualification process has exposed HBM yield problems across a number of manufacturers. SK Hynix, Samsung and Micron are competing fiercely on the HBM3E front—with hopes of getting their respective products attached to NVIDIA's H200 AI GPU. DigiTimes Asia proposed that SK Hynix is ready to "commence mass production of fifth-generation HBM3E" at some point this month.

SK Hynix is believed to be leading the pack—insiders believe that yield rates are good enough to pass early NVIDIA certification, and advanced 12-layer samples are expected to be approved in the near future. ZDNET reckons that SK Hynix's forward momentum has placed it an advantageous position: "(They) supplied 8-layer HBM3E samples in the second half of last year and passed recent testing. Although the official schedule has not been revealed, mass production is expected to begin as early as this month. Furthermore, SK Hynix supplied 12-layer HBM3E samples to NVIDIA last month. This sample is an extremely early version and is mainly used to establish standards and characteristics of new products. SK Hynix calls it UTV (Universal Test Vehicle)... Since Hynix has already completed the performance verification of the 8-layer HBM3E, it is expected that the 12-layer HBM3E test will not take much time." SK Hynix's Vice President recently revealed that his company's 2024 HBM production volumes for were already sold out, and leadership is already preparing innovations for 2025 and beyond.
